PVR NEST’s program on Child Protection and Day Care

According to UNICEF, the early years (0 to 8 years) is the most extraordinary period of growth and development in a child’s lifetime. It sets the foundation for later learning and growth. During this stage, ECCE (Early Childhood Care and Education) is imperative to foster a child’s holistic development. ECCE encompasses a range of processes and mechanisms that sustain and support development during the early years of child’s life: it includes education, physical, social and emotional care, intellectual stimulation, healthcare and nutrition, in order to build a child’s solid foundation for lifelong learning and wellbeing. ECCE apart from boosting a child’s development offers a platform for social equity and inclusion.

Unfortunately in this critical period, lack of day care infrastructure (and absence of affordable quality childcare facilities), force women from economically weaker sections to leave their children – either alone or under inadequate supervision of their elder siblings, while stepping out to earn their livelihood. Since women are still principal caregivers, this risk of subjecting their unattended children to abuse, becomes a deterrent for them to venture out and work. Most women therefore, forfeit livelihood opportunities in this trade-off, and in turn forgo their earnings that are vital for their families’ sustenance.

Adequate day care is not only imperative for vulnerable children but also an essential prerequisite for their families’ overall welfare. Considering this predicament, PVR NEST in partnership with NDMC, Mobile Creches, Navsrishti, Nipun and Umeed- Ray of Hope Society, launched the AANCHAL CHILDSCAPES project. The initiative is developed based on a unique public-private partnership model. It leverages the strengths of all partners to provide safe, nurturing environment of Creche and Care centers to vulnerable children (the age group is 6 months to 12 years), and thereby, empowers their mothers with the choice to take up employment opportunities.

Under the supervision of trained staff, Aanchal Childscapes Creche and Care Centers operate 6 days a week, 12 hours a day (7 AM – 7PM) with singular focus on child’s physical, cognitive, emotional and social development by imparting age-appropriate learning and nutritional care. Children are provided with 3 nutritious meals a day; and additional special meal supplements are given to severely malnourished children. Education and social skills are imparted in an interactive play way method, and peer learning is encouraged. Admission support is provided to children, yet to be enrolled in schools; and the already school going children are given tutorial support.

The centres are situated in 10 North Delhi Municipal Corporation Primary Schools, where appropriate child to staff ratio is maintained. With these centres, we have created a unique model in association with the government to leverage the strength of their school systems and to amplify and integrate the program in their network.

Let’s commit to stand by the side of every vulnerable child and woman, and endeavour to create a world that protects nurtures and enables women and children to access opportunities.
A world that offers possibilities to help fulfill their dreams !
