Ajay Bijli

Chairman & Managing Director, PVR Limited & Trustee, PVR Nest

“With PVR Nest we want to work for the welfare of the community we operate in. We visualize a change within the less privileged sections residing in and around PVR Complexes, especially the poor and disadvantaged children, through a series of sustainable educational, cultural and social activities, we have initiated under the aegis of PVR Nest.”

Mr. Ajay Bijli, Chairman & Managing Director, PVR Limited and Harvard Business School alumni (1999), pioneered the concept of multiplex cinemas in India. A first generation entrepreneur, Mr Bijli started with just one cinema hall, Priya, which he took over from his father and expanded the business into a chain of multiplexes, bringing the best movie-going experience to Indian cinemagoers, who were long starved of quality facilities.

Ajay’s first milestone was the formation of Priya Village Roadshow (PVR), a joint venture with the Australian multinational cinema company, Village Roadshow Limited. In 1997, the company launched India’s first successful multiplex, a four-screen complex PVR Anupam at Saket, New Delhi. Today, PVR stands at 26 properties and 108 screens across 14 cities in 10 states of India.

Over the past decade, Mr. Bijli has spearheaded PVR into a full fledged entertainment company and established it as a strong brand associated with movies, quality exhibition and youth-targeted promotions as well as film exhibition, distribution and production. Lately, in a joint venture with Major of Thailand, PVR has ventured into other forms of retail entertainment such as bowling, ice skating, karaoke, etc. PVR has very recently opened India’s largest 24 lane bowling alley under the brand name ‘Blu O’ at Ambience Mall, Gurgaon.

A strategic and innovative thinker, Mr. Bijli was recognized as the ‘Young Global Leader’ for the year 2007 by the World Economic Forum. He is Member, Central Board of Film Certification, Government of India. Widely recognized as a credible voice for the Indian film industry, Mr. Bijli has represented the industry at various forums and is also the founding member of the FICCI Multiplex Association of India. The India Retail Forum and Images Retail both have awarded him as ‘Entrepreneur of the Year in the Entertainment category’.

Mr. Bijli has been conferred ‘The Theatre World Newsmaker of the Year Award, 2003’ at FICCI-FRAMES 2004; a Special Award at CineAsia 2004 and Teacher’s Special Achievement Award 2004 for his Contribution to the Multiplex Industry in India. He was also awarded ‘Delhi Ratna’ by the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry in 2005. Ajay is a Member of Young Presidents’ Organization.

As the Chairman and Managing Director of PVR, he is instrumental in identifying important business initiatives and strategic opportunities for the group.
